Kuromugi-dō
A moment to unwind in the city.
Kuromugi-dō serves generous soba sets alongside rice bowls and a broad evening menu of izakaya-style drinking plates in Tokyo's Ikegami neighborhood.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When you arrive with a serious appetite, Kuromugi-dō in Ikegami is an easy neighborhood shop to turn to. Alongside soba staples like cold mori soba and hot kake soba, the kitchen offers sets pairing noodles with compact rice bowls—such as mini katsu-don, mini oyako-don, and mini curry-don. Despite the mini label on the side dishes, portions are notably substantial, making for a satisfying meal as you alternate between smooth, chilled noodles and rice seasoned with sweet-savory sauces.
The hot soba selection features flavorful dashi broths enriched by various ingredients, including kamo nanban with duck, tori nanban with chicken, and thick, warming curry nanban. Cold dipping options such as niku seiro with simmered meat or curry seiro are also on offer, with plenty of leeway to customize your bowl using add-ons like crunchy agedama tempura flakes, grated tororo yam, or spicy grated daikon radish.
Come nightfall, the shop expands well beyond standard noodle-counter fare with a varied roster of small dishes meant to accompany drinks. Classic soba-mae nibbles like sliced kamaboko fish cake (itawasa), rolled omelet, and savory soba miso pair naturally with a cold beer or chilled sake. Fried soba topped with a vegetable-laden starchy sauce (age-soba yasai ankake) is a distinctive house specialty. Heartier plates like pork belly stir-fried with eggplant and miso, deep-fried chicken tender with spicy cod roe and cheese, and hot pot options like motsu nabe lend the space a relaxed, izakaya-like rhythm suited equally to solo diners and casual evening gatherings.
Whether you stop in at midday to recharge over a generous combo or settle in after dark for drinks before finishing with a basket of cold mori soba, note that payment is cash only, so having bills and coins on hand is essential.
